Billy Brown was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He was raised in a comfortable upper-middle-class suburb; however, tragedy struck when he was only 16 years old. His mother, father, and sister died in a plane crash. Later in life Billy Brown moved to the Alaskan bush with his wife Ami. Billy and Ami raised seven children in the Alaskan wilderness.
